During World War I the use of trenches became popular as these allowed the soldiers to be protected from enemies and especially from artillery. The zones in which trenches were placed near to trenches of the enemy were known as Trench warfare. There most representative example of this was the Western Front that was a set of trenches located in Belgium. Additionally, the area or terrain between trenches was commonly known as "No man's land" as these areas did not belong to any of the parties in the war and also they remained empty as crossing them was dangerous.
