Eliminate (i) from (iii), we get

2. Let x = Number of dimes

y= Number of nickels

Equation: $x+y= 12$  (i)

Equation: $10x+5y=75$   (ii)  [∵ 1 nickel = 5 cents, 1 quarter = 25 cents]

Multiply equation (i) by 5, we get

$5x+5y=60$  (iii)

Eliminate (iii) from (ii), we get

$5x=15\Rightarrow\x=3$

put x=3 in (i) ,

$3+y=12\Rightarrow\ y=9$
