From even this stronghold the unlucky Rip was at length routed by his termagant wife, who would suddenly break in upon the tranq

uillity of the assemblage, and call the members all to nought; nor was that august personage, Nicholas Vedder himself, sacred from the daring tongue of this terrible virago, who charged him outright with encouraging her husband in habits of idleness.
Using context clues, what does the word termagant most likely mean in this excerpt from Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle"?

delicate girl
devoted homemaker
overbearing woman
school teacher

Answer:

The answer is (C) overbearing woman.

Explanation:

Rip Van Winkle is a short story written by Washington Irving in 1819 about a Dutch-American man who falls asleep only to find himself awake 20 years later after the American Revolution. The wife mentioned in the quoted paragraph is Dame Van Winkle, who often nags her husband who is quite lazy and abhors the idea of working. We can guess that the meaning of ‘termagant’ is overbearing woman from the description given in the paragraph above, without having to look at the dictionary, from phrases such as “suddenly break in upon the tranquility” and “daring tongue of this terrible virago”.

Answer:

Which sentence is the topic sentence? 3

Which sentence is the concluding sentence? 4

Which sentence does not support the topic of the paragraph? 7

Explanation:

It's very simple to understand, The conclusion sentence should either restate the topic sentence or just wrap everything up. It makes the most sense that the topic sentence is 3 because it's a generic sentence, whereas the other sentences are supporting details. If the topic of the paragraph is 3, 7 is the sentence that does not support that topic.

In what ways does Franklin fear the delegates may undermine the Constitution
Pepsi [2]

Franklin feared that the Constitution may be undermined by the delegates because if Britain declines, this could risk the safety of the people who signed it.

  • When the Constitution was completed, the delegates didn't want to sign it, and Ben Franklin persuaded them to sign it which they eventually did.

  • Franklin believed that even though the Constitution was signed by the delegates, they may undermine it due to the fact that if Britain declines it, the delegates will be the ones to be looked for and this could risk their safety.

In about 120 words comment ot the statement:
stiks02 [169]
The statement is partially correct, the laws would be extreme in numbers and there would be far more punishments than a state with a moderate amount of laws. There would be more laws or regulations broken or violated when it would regard certain things. But the number of laws however does not exactly show how corrupt the state may be, but how extensive or extreme the punishments for the crime would be.
