In "Morte d’Arthur," after Sir Bedivere is order to get rid of Excalibur and gives it to the Lady of the Lake, the ladies painfully take dying King Arthur away on the barge. They are weeping intensely heartbroken and mournful, and their black hoods are a representation of Arthur's forthcoming mortality.
