The first San Antonio mission was established in 1718 and was meant to, along with other Missions in the area, convert natives and provide a buffer zone against the French in North America.
Consisting of a wall and fertile lands for growing crops, the mission served and protected the Coahuiltecan Native Americans and other smaller groups until 1793 when the mission closed. The missions established here provided the groundwork for the establishment of settlements in Texas.
