During the Reconstruction, the government's main objective was to assimilate Black Africans and former slaves into mainstream American society, and ensure that their newly given rights were protected.

However, many Southerners disagreed with this, as it was opposed to their traditional way of life. They believed African American people to be inferior to them, and were scared to give up power. Therefore, this period saw a lot of conflict in the South, and led to the development of institutions such as segregation and Jim Crow laws.
