I know that it was from May 26, 1940 to June 4, 1940. You can probably find some good information on Wikipedia. I use that as my main source for my government class, and I usually receive good grades on my assignments. :)

A clear example of this is King John of England, who was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in the 13th century after a dispute with Pope Innocent III.
