Carefree

In the beginning Bilbo tells Gandalf that his is "plain quiet folk" with "no use for adventures". The first chapter describes the Baggins' family as having an enjoyable simple ordinary life. These would not lend himself to being bold or brave. Eventually Gandalf convinces him to go on the adventure and he becomes bold and brave, but in the beginning Bilbo is simply carefree.

He does not know that the man he was trying to hunt, a man who had killed his father and married his own mother, was himself. He had been set aside from his parents at a very early age, so he knew none of them. That is why he could not have known that the man he had killed was his father and that the woman he married to was his mother.
