New England has really rocky soil. When the English settlers first arrived in New England, they idea was clear land for agriculture, because farming was becoming the main activity of the colonies. The thing is due to this rocks, New England farms were smaller which due to the subsistence farming instead of large-scale farming, which mean they only produced what was enough to satisfy their needs in short run.
