what type of stresses are largely responsible for the folds which trap oil and gas in the arabian peninsula?
Ugo [173]

Fossil fuels, petroleum and natural gas are found in sedimentary rocks.

These types of traps are formed by rock folding. Specifically, a bed of low-permeability shale-covered sandstone is folded into a trap containing petroleum products. Hydrocarbons are trapped at the crest of this fold. The opening of each Tethys Ocean was accompanied by extensional tectonics that created continental rifts during the Infracambrian (Ediacaran-Cambrian transition period), Ordovician, and Permian time in the Middle East. . These rift basins add favorable locations for petroleum production in the region. Tectonic activity - With tectonic activity over millions of years, the Tethys Ocean eroded and the Middle East was transformed into a dry, sandy desert. This exposed the upper layers containing the largest amount of oil and natural gas deposits.
