During the Civil War, Southern States seceded from the Union and created the Confederacy States because they felt their interests were no longer represented in the Union under Abraham Lincoln's leadership, because he wanted to stop the expansion of slavery.

Northern states, also known as the Union, were urban free-states, and some of their advantages were:

• They had a bigger population than Southern states, which meant more men of fighting age.

• They were industrialized cities that were able to produce war supplies, such as weapons and arms with railroads and canals to transport them.

• An organized and recognized strong system of government, the Union had a system of established laws, taxes, agencies, money and support.
