How is industrialization indirectly leading to desertification in China?

History

Answer:

Industrialization has required the rapid expanse of coal-fired power plants and the use of other fossil fuels. These energy sources release greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. One effect of climate change is rising temperatures and less moisture in arid regions, which has increased desertification in large parts of China.

Chinese officials are attempting to slow the progress of desertification by encouraging the planting of trees that require little water. The trees help protect against erosion from wind and other factors, keeping rich soil in place. Chinese officials also are encouraging farmers to move into these arid areas to engage in dry farming. In addition, they are encouraging local residents to use methane gas for fuel instead of environmentally damaging coal or wood.
