Prior to the 9/11 attacks, the United States immigration policy was more flexible than nowadays. The country was seen as a place where immigrants from all parts of the world could come, achieve their personal goals and live "the American Dream".

The city of New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world. This is why people who worked in the twin towers and subsequently died after the attacks were from many nationalities and backgrounds.
