For the new immigrants to America, the Statue of Liberty was supposed to symbolize a reassuring sign that they had arrived in the land of their dreams.

What is the The New Colossus poem?

The poem was based on a heated debate on immigration. The New Colossus was written by Emma Lazarus to help raise funds for construction of the towering sculpture's pedestal. One of rhe popular line states "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

The poem commands the old lands to send its marginalized people, the “huddled masses,” to her. She will ensure that those who are “homeless” and long to “breathe free” will find refuge.
