They were forcefully evicted in what is known as trail of tears

 The Indians did not leave their lands peacefully. The USA had to send a military reinforcement led by Winfield Scott, to forcefully evict the native Indians. The few bucks per acre that Ross, had negotiated for, was not approved by the Cherokee council.
