There is no such thing as a fact in a memoir: everything is opinion.
The punctuation is correct if that is how how the statement started and ended.
In general you want to be a bit more concise in forming a thesis statement. Usually you should shoot for between 1 and 2 sentences summarizing your argument in a concise way so that it is easily understandable to the reader. I would take what you have written and look for your main argument and try and put that in 1 to 2 sentences.

A subject would be the MAIN thing of the story. There can be many of them. A VERB is a action they are doing.
Let me show you a example:
The Basketball player made a shot.
The basketball player is our subject, that's who we are talking about. The verb would be the shot because he is shooting the shot.
