When we subtract equations we subtract the left sides, subtract the right sides, and set them equal.  I'll show detailed steps but usually you can just do it all in one step.

5x + 4y = 25

5x + 2y = 3

Subtracting,

5x + 4y -(5x + 2y) = 25 - 3

2y = 22

The problem is easily solved from here, but let's call it done with

Choice B

What is the error in the equation
dimulka [17.4K]

Answer:

The fifth line contains the error.

Step-by-step explanation:

Line 1 is the equation.

Lines 2, 3, and 4 are correct.

The error is in the 5th line.

The square root of a negative number is not a real number, so if this problem is solved only with real numbers, there is no solution.

If imaginary numbers are allowed, then the last line should read:

x = \pm\dfrac{i\sqrt{11}}{2}
