Gibson uses symbolism to enhance the theme of authority. Symbolism is when an object represents something else. In this case, keys symbolize authority. The character who possesses the keys is the person in charge of the household. We see Helen with the keys. Annie is in charge of the keys during Helen’s temper tantrum in the breakfast scene. Later, Helen gives the keys to her mother. At the end of the play, Helen takes the keys from her mother and gives them to Annie.
