- One way in which a virus gains control of a cell is to direct the synthesis of new viral proteins, which include such molecule

s as enzymes. To do this, however, the virus must provide the cell with mRNA for the production of such proteins. Viruses can achieve this goal in one of three basic ways: (1) they can import mRNA into the cell in the form of the viral genome (2) they can allow the cell to make viral mRNA through normal cellular genetic processes by providing the cell with viral DNA (3) they can use unique mechanisms to convert their genomes into a form suitable for protein production • ex. + ssRNA virus; this type of genome essentially mimics the mRNA found in the cell • ex. DNA virus, either ds or ss, which can take advantage of normal cellular processes to produce mRNA • ex. - dsRNA virus, which uses a novel enzyme called RNA - dependent RNA transcriptase to convert its genome into + ssRNA, which can then be used for protein synthesis

"ricin inhibits the functioning of ribosomes. What part of protein synthesis would be affected by ricin? What effect would this
kondor19780726 [428]

Ricin comes under the category of functionally related toxins, in a combination known as RIPs (ribosome inactivating proteins). This disables ribosomes and stops the process of protein synthesis.

They directly associate with and inactivate the ribosomes or modify the factors taking part in the process of translation, generally the elongation step. These proteins bring about depurination of adenine at position 4324 in the 28 S rRNA.

This further inhibits the generation of a critical-stem-loop configuration to which the elongation factor is considered to combine at the time of the translocation step of translation. The ultimate outcome of this activity is the complete inhibition of cellular translation.

The image shows the evolution of a species of fish. A few fish from a population developed different social behaviors and evolve
adell [148]

According to the image, the fish underwent sympatric speciation. The new species of fish had mating seasons that were different from that of the original fish. Because of the differences in mating seasons, the fish underwent reproductive isolation. This mode of isolation would be temporal.

Sympatric speciation happens within a population of an organism that gets isolated reproductively due to differences in their mating periods. This time dependent isolation is called temporal isolation. Example, a fish population can split into two if some of the fishes start mating early in the spring while the rest mate late in the autumn. The spring-mating population will not become compatible to mate with the late-autumn-mating population.
