The phrase "soft like women" shows that the men of Umuofia have changed and become less masculine. Okonkwo is proud of his clan and the strength of his people. However, when he returns things have fallen apart. They are no longer the clan he once knew which deeply saddens him. The men are initially described as warlike but then in the same sentence described as being like women. This change disgusts Okonkwo.
