Why did many new immigrants take dangerous jobs in factories and mines?

Factories and mines needed skilled workers that knew how to do all the necessary jobs. They would pay a lot of money to the people who knew how to do these jobs. Many coal miners in America came from working in the British mines in whales. And many factory workers already had experience from their home-country.
