Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that two years earlier, in 1632, the King of England, Charles I, who pledged allegiance to the Protestant Church but curiously had a passion for Catholic art, had granted George Calvert the right to own and exploit land in that territory, which was named Maryland in honor of the queen consort, Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died without having witnessed the settling of the colony. His older son inherited the land, and, with the firm resolution of turning Maryland into a place where people of various religions could pray and live together safely (including English Catholics), let his brother organize the travel of a group of settlers from England that landed at t St. Clement's Island in 1634. Their dream, however, did not last long, since conflicts, such as disputes between Catholic and Protestant settlers, soon arose in the colony.
