Civil disobedience is an act of protest that involves a committed refusal to obey a particular law or a set of laws, orders or commands of the government. The most important attribute of civil disobedience is that it has to be non-violent, and peaceful. Civil disobedience is usually accompanied by peaceful protests and has been employed by several activists in achieving their goals many times. The concept of civil disobedience was first developed by a journalist Henry David Thoreau, although the practice had existed long before that. The most popular forms of civil disobedience were observed by Mahatma Gandhi during his struggles for demanding independence for India.

Civil disobedience is mainly involved with contempt of the law.  It encourages people to reject those laws which are unjust or hampers social development. There are many aspects to civil disobedience which makes it meaning unclear. Throughout the years in which civil disobedience has been practiced, certain rules have been associated with it, that specifies a choice of a variety of illegal acts. Some of the most common forms of civil disobedience are an illegal boycott, refusal to pay taxes, picketing, draft-dodging, denial of services, strikes, and sit-ins.non-co-operation. Non-cooperation with government, institutions make it difficult for them to function. Civil disobedience is often considered to be an effective way of protest, although it has a bit of coercive nature attached to it.
