The Castle was an iconic and important position for the Mexican Army because it is located at the top of a hill and had been the official residence of Maximilian, the Dutch emperor in the past. The United States troops assaulted the castle with 2,000 soldiers. The castle was defended by 800 cadets that were training to became soldiers. In the end, the U.S. troops took the castle.
