1. There was not a lot of wood so, settlers used sod to build homes.

2. They carried water from streams.

3. Some farmers used windmills to pump water from underground.

4. Farmers made machines, which made it faster and easier to grow more crops

Previously, picking these seeds out of cotton took a great deal of time and energy, but the invention of the cotton gin in 1794 sped up the process, allowing farms to produce far more cotton and increasing the amount of cotton available for making clothing.
