In 1905 representatives of 43 groups who opposed the policies of American Federation of Labour, formed the radical labour organisation, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). The IWW's goal was to promote worker solidarity in the revolutionary struggle to overthrow the employing class.

Even though the revolutions did not succeed, the forces of liberalism and nationalism triumphed after 1850 because of the ideas of several individuals and artists such as Karl Marx and Gustave Flaubert. Another reason is that the people were made aware of the corrupt and deceitful actions of Napoleon III.<span />
The artist who drew the political cartoon of the Brooks-Sumner Affair, supported Sumner in his fight for anti-slavery. The incident between Brooks and Sumner happened during a two day-speech delivered by the latter against slavery. It was in 1856 that a senator from South Carolina named Preston Brooks attacked Massachussetts congressman known as Charles Sumner. The attacked was provoked by the anti-slavery speech delivered by the Congressman that angered Brooks. Brooks' cane in the incident has been broken while Sumner suffered serious illness due to the beating.
