1. The correct answer is D) We met after school to study for the big math test next week.
The infinitive here is the phrase 'to study,' and it functions as an adverb in this sentence. You can easily determine that by asking the adverbial question 'Why?' Why did we meet? - To study for the big math test next week. That way you know it's an adverb.

2. The correct answer is A) As a new faculty member, Susan wanted to succeed.
Here, the infinitive is 'to succeed,' and it functions as the direct object of the sentence. You can simply ask the question 'What?' in order to determine a direct object. What did she want? To succeed. That way you know it's a direct object.

3. The correct answer is D) The best way to learn to make biscuits is to talk to my mom.
There are two infinitives in this sentence, to learn and to make. However, the latter is used as a direct object, whereas the former functions as an adjective. Adjectives are found near nouns and describe them in more detail - here, the infinitive 'to learn' describes the noun 'way.'

4. The correct answer is The job requires getting your hair cut to a short, safe length.
You've written the same example for all options, however, it is the correct answer nevertheless. The gerund here is 'getting,' and it functions as the direct object of the verb 'requires.' What does the job require? Getting your hair cut.

Complete the text with the transition that best connects the supporting evidence to
Nesterboy [21]

Answer: As a result.

Explanation:

''As a result'' should be used as a transition when connecting phrases that show cause and effect because it would show that the effect is as a result of the cause/ scenario depicted first.

Here we see that older and wealthier Americans are more likely to vote and the effect of this is that they have a greater influence on government because they decide who gets political office. ''As a result'' would show the relationship between these two by showing that the effect is as a result of the cause.

Ostrovityanka [42]

Answer:

The Anglo-Saxon traditions illustrated in Beowulf accurately represent the Anglo-Saxon traditions of the time period. This is accomplished through the distinct correlation of heroic characteristics between Beowulf and the culture’s traditional depiction of an Anglo-Saxon hero. Anglo-Saxons believed that, “to be a hero was to be a warrior” (Garcia). They…show more content…

Humbleness was also key for an Anglo-Saxon hero as it proved respectability and honor towards the hero. Anglo-Saxons wanted their hero to prove their strength and courage, however, they did not want the hero to become a dictator of any kind. Strong friendships were known as the most trustable alliances an Anglo-Saxon hero could form for battles (Trekker2392). It was key for an Anglo-Saxon hero to have the ability to create strong friendships around him. Beowulf perfectly identifies to all five of these main characteristics throughout the epic poem. Courage, bravery, and strength are three heroic Anglo-Saxon characteristics that tie together perfectly. Without courage, you will not have strength and bravery. Without strength and bravery, you will not have the courage to face your challenges. Anglo-Saxons believed three of these characteristics were perfectly interwoven in the ideal Anglo-Saxon hero (Garcia).
