Later on, he admits to drinking "two finger-bowls of champagne" but doesn't seem to drink any more than that. He stays sober enough to perceive how the drunken guests make a fool out of themselves and yet it all seems acceptable since it is a party.

<em>I was enjoying myself now. I had taken two finger-bowls of champagne, and the scene had changed before my eyes into something significant, elemental, and profound.</em>
