During the Civil War, the North had the advantages of being the older states. They had a bigger army that included African Americans, and a greater funding from the rest of the states. They also had the president at the time, Abraham Lincoln, leading their army and passing amendments and laws that stopped the Confederate states from doing anything. Lincoln was a great leader and speaker, who was able to bring people to see his side of the argument clearly.

For the very reason that us as Americans have been in this two-party system for so long that we would want to keep this tradition rather than to add another party, and oppose eachother even more. Also, voters feel that having a third party vote is irrelevant because it is less likely to be voted for and won over.
