Why did Truman decide to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima?
ad-work [718]

Further explanation

The United States bombed atoms in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945, at the end of the Second World War. The United States dropped a bomb with the approval of the United Kingdom as recorded in the Quebec Treaty. The two bombing operations that killed at least 129,000 people were the first and last time using nuclear weapons in history.

August 6, U.S. dropped a rifle-type uranium atomic bomb on Hiroshima. United States President Harry S. Truman asked Japan to surrender 16 hours later and warned of an "unprecedented rain of debris from the air on earth." Three days later, on August 9, U.S. dropped an implanted plutonium bomb (Fat Man) on Nagasaki. In the first two to four months after the bombing, the impact killed 90,000–146,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000–80,000 in Nagasaki; approximately half the victims in each city were killed on the first day. In the months that followed, many people died due to the effects of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries accompanied by illness and malnutrition. In the two cities, most of the dead were civilians despite the presence of a large military garrison in Hiroshima.

On 15 August, six days after the Nagasaki bombing and the Soviet Union declared war, Japan declared surrender to the Allies. On September 2, Japan signed an instrument of surrender that automatically ended World War II. The effect of this bombing on Japanese surrender and ethical reasons is still debated until now.
