When they use the -ando and -iendo its to show that -ando is used or infinitive words ending with -ar ( like lavar) and that -iendo is used for infinitive words ending with -er or -ir ( like comer or escribir). When doing present progressive form you do estar + -ando/-iendo. The estar is helping you direct it to a certain person or group of people.
