Often separated from each other due to John's political work, the self-educated Abigail oversaw the family's household and largely raised their four children on her own, all the while maintaining a lively lifelong correspondence with her husband on the political issues of the day. A strong advocate of women's rights, Abigail Adams encouraged her husband and other members of the Continental Congress to "...remember the ladies..." as they began the work of crafting a new American government.
