Settlers went to Oregon in the 1800's to participate in the fur trade.  Settlers also wanted to claim land and settle in the Willamette Valley.  The Willamette Valley has fertile soil that is good for growing and sustaining crops.  The temperature in Oregon is also mild all year long.
