cestrela7 [59]

A shantytown constructed along the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon is depicted in this picture. Disorganized, shaky words best describe the buildings in this shantytown.

According to UN-Habitat (2016), a shanty town is an unofficial or illegal colony that is distinguished by subpar housing built of plastic sheets, corrugated metal, or cardboard boxes and occupied by poor people who lack secure shelter. One-sixth of the world's population, or 1 billion people, currently reside in shantytowns. Usually, scrap plywood, corrugated metal, and plastic sheets are used to construct houses. The availability of safe water, sanitary facilities, electricity, and telephone services is frequently inadequate in shantytowns. Around the world, Ciudad Neza in Mexico, Orangi in Pakistan, and Dharavi in India are some of the biggest slum areas. Numerous names, such favela in Brazil, villa miseria in Argentina, and gecekondu in Turkey, are given to them in various locations. The history of shanty towns in the United States begins in 1929, when the unemployed were forced out of their homes and began constructing these shanty towns. When the economy suffered a setback in 1930, the situation also deteriorated as more and more people moved in.

What caused relations to deteriorate between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1979? The United States invaded Afghanist
Simora [160]

ANSWER:

The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

EXPLANATION:

In the year 1978,Afghanistan adjoined few of the southern Soviet republics of the USSR, causing it easy for Moscow to finance a communist-led government led by Taraki when it gained power in Kabul in April 1978.Various common Afghans refused the new communist government because its atheism was had differences with their Muslim faith. The communists detained, wounded and assassinated many Muslim religious leaders. This led to the formation of an anti-communist stand known as the Mujahideen.

In September 1979 the Afghan politician, Amin, prepared for the murder of the communist Prime Minister, Taraki, and Amin won control. Amin entered into talks with the US.

This alarmed the USSR who didn’t need American impact on their Southern border. On 24 December 1979, Soviet troops attacked Afghanistan. Amin was killed and a pro-Moscow leader, Babrak Karmal, was introduced in his place.

Observing the circumstances in Afghanistan as an extension of the Cold War, the US backed the Mujahideen against their old enemy, the USSR, and refused to sign SALT II.
