Ludmilka [50]

According to Hansen, the Athens' political system more democratic than democracies we think of today it is government by the people instead of government by those elected by the people. It is less democratic because it narrowed down to only adult male citizens in the assembly.

Democracy in Greece

Democracy in Greece was first developed in Athens around the 6th century BC . It comprised of the Greek city-state of Athens, and the surrounding territory of Attica.

Greek democracy created at Athens was direct, rather than representative: any adult male citizen over the age of 20 could take part, and it was a duty to do so.

The officials of the democracy were in part elected by the Assembly and in large part chosen by lottery in a process called sortition.

According to Hansen, the democracy in Greece was direct because everyone participated in it unlike electing representatives as it is done today. However it is criticized because only males above the age of 20 who had both Greek parents could participate.
