Free press is important to Democracy because of Freedom of Speech, Which is our 1st Amendment. And the press were a big part of the Vietnam War due to them being the only vision to the world to the west of what was going on. This also in turn lead to Civil rights groups being formed to help combat Civil Rights issues with the Vietnam war, and/or fight for a cause against the Vietnam War.
Hope this helps.
