But eventually , they let the rats eat them to prevent the dead from spreading deseaes

The soldiers living in in the trenches "lived with the dead" because during war soldiers would use trenches as cover and to have a safer place to shoot from but the trenches were where a lot of soldiers died so with them dying in the trenches it would explain why the soldiers that lived in the trenches would "live with the dead".
