Not only dead, they also read them stotries such as ted lavener's tranquilizer use or curt lemon's trick or treating. The soldiers living in in the trenches "lived with the dead" because during war soldiers would use trenches as cover and to have a safer place to shoot from but the trenches were where a lot of soldiers died so with them dying in the trenches it would explain why the soldiers that lived in the trenches would "live with the dead".
