The soldiers living in in the trenches "lived with the dead" because during war soldiers would use trenches as cover and to have a safer place to shoot from but the trenches were where a lot of soldiers died so with them dying in the trenches it would explain why the soldiers that lived in the trenches would "live with the dead".
