The largest number of Italians moved to America from 1880 to 1924, and half of that number in the period from 1900 to 1910. Mostly Italian emigrants were from the poorer southern parts of Italy, and the most famous ones are those from Sicily. Also, according to estimates, today, Italians make up 6% of the total US population, while representing the fourth largest entity of European heirs, after the Germans, Irish and the English.
