Why is natural selection, as a scientific model, applied at the population level and NOT at the individual level?

Biology

Answer:

Scientific model of natural selection applies to groups because pressures are experienced only to groups of individuals and not to individuals themselves.

Explanation:

Natural selection, linked to the evolution proposed by Charles Darwin, refers to the way in which different genotypes are presented in a population, subject to reproduction. In simple terms, genetic variations in a population, determined by the need to adapt to their environment, produce changes in the genotypic expression of later generations.

Groups of individuals of a species must be subject to the same environmental pressure and changes in their environment for natural selection to occur and be inheritable to subsequent generations. Changes experienced by a single individual are not significant for offspring within a population.

For natural selection to occur there must be certain conditions:

 • A characteristic in a species must be inheritable.
 • This characteristic, which belongs to a population, must be variable among the individuals who are part of it.
 • Survival and reproductive success depend on genetic variability among individuals of the same species.

Currently, the modern conception of natural selection discusses whether this selection occurs at the group level.

1. What does your body do to infected cells?
Shkiper50 [21]

Answer: White blood cells form to fight off cell infections.

Explanation:

1. Your body produces white blood cells which fight against infected cells, depends on what type of cell it is and how infected it is.

2. The immune response to a viral infection is primarily generated by a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes; cells that are mostly localized in ‘lymphoid tissues’ such as the lymph nodes or tonsils. However, the number of lymphocytes that can recognize and react against any individual type of virus is initially very small. This is particularly true for a novel virus such as SARS-CoV-2, which people have never encountered before. In order to produce an effective immune response, the small number of lymphocytes that can recognize a virus must become more abundant. Even though lymphocytes proliferate quickly it still takes several days before there are sufficient cells available to fight back against the infection. During this period the virus may also be spreading rapidly, so there is a race between the virus and the immune system that may determine the final outcome, in terms of recovery.

An investigation was done to see if keeping the lights on for different amounts of time each day affected the number of eggs chi
sergiy2304 [10]

Answer:

This question is incomplete, the complete part is asking to identify the variables of the experimental statement i.e. dependent and the independent variables.

Independent variable: different amounts of time light is on

Dependent variable: Number of eggs laid by chicken

Explanation:

In a scientific experiment, variables, which are factors that can be altered, are used. These variables are independent and dependent variables.

An independent variable is that variable that is subject to manipulation or control by the experimenter in order to bring about a change in the dependent variable. For this experiment, the independent variable is the DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF TIME LIGHT IS ON.

On the other hand, a variable is said to be dependent if it is the measurable or responding variable. The response of the dependent variable is dependent on the independent variable. In this experiment, the dependent variable is the NUMBER OF EGGS LAID BY CHICKENS. The number of eggs laid (dependent variable) is dependent on the amount of time light is on (independent variable).
