Chinese immigrants were looked down upon more readily than other immigrants for many reasons. The first is that they would except staggeringly low wages. This made it difficult for other American's to protest or strike for higher wages or even to find jobs at times. American's felt that they were far superior because the Chinese wore different types of clothing, they had a totally different type of diet, the men wore their hair long and unkempt, and they practiced strange religions. Because of all of this American's were extremely discriminating towards them and did not want them tainting the view of America. This came to a head on May 6, 1882 when government finally listened to voter's complaints and passed the Chinese Exclusion Act.
