At the beginning of the short story "The next adventure" Malik does not want to move to Japan as he is supposed to since her mother has to move because of her job, he has a bad attitude and refuses to enjoy his time in Japan until one day he gets to know the guys from other families and they become his new friends, this gave Malik a lesson, he learned to accept and enjoy whatever comes in life.

His concern for sled dogs...I believe it is his desire to help his furry pal. I was going to mention his worry for his sled dogs, but I lacked the rest of the context. "they do get on the nerves awful" is possibly  referring to the sled dogs and how they get on his nerves.
