A Prime Minister is the head of the government, and is generally designed to 'lead' the government and represent it in the eyes of the people. A President is the Head of State, usually with large power and influence within the country. A President is also usually elected by the people, whereas a Prime Minister is elected by the politicians in a party as the head of that particular party.

As head of government prime minister leads the operations of the government while a president is the chief representative of the county and performs ceremonial duties. He welcomes foreign dignitaries and acts as the commander in chief of the government. It keeps one branch of government from becoming too powerful.
