In mid-1828 a tariff was created that allowed a tax on foreign manufactured goods. This tariff was very displeasing to Southerners as they traded cotton for European manufactured goods, but these products would be very expensive at this rate.

As you know, southern states had an agrarian economy and needed to import manufactured goods because the production of these products in those states was very insignificant. The northern states produced many manufactured goods, because of political tensions, the southern states did not wish to buy these products from the northern states. In fact, Southerners would like to buy these products from the cheapest sellers, at that time European products were cheaper due to the exchange for cotton, however, the tariff made these products more expensive and 'forced' southern states to buy from the northern states.
