Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in America, founded in 1607. The Virginia Company was responsible for establishing the first colony in America. For the first time in 1619, Africans brought to the English colony of Jamestown. From there the slavery started in colonies because without them, the colonists could not survive. Slaves helped in assisting colonists in farming, shipping, and domestic help.

An important thing that happened at Jamestown in 1619 was the first elected assembly to make laws for the emerging colony.

Women came to the Jamestown Colony to marry men to encourage setters to start a new life again without deserting the colony.
