Many of the early Chinese literary works were destroyed by the first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty.

Further Explanations:

The demise of the Zhou dynasty led to the advent of the Qin Dynasty. The dynasty emerged as a very powerful opposition of the literature established by the two former dynasties. After annexation, the emperor ordered to destroy the literature and temples of China. He even ordered to reduce the number of schools in the kingdom. Volumes all over the empire were destroyed and Confucian teachers were killed. These forms of literature were developed by dynasties who have ruled China earlier namely Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty who are credited the most for the development of the art and literature of China.

Shang Dynasty of China is recognized for the development of literature that spanned for thousands of years. A characteristic of the literature was that it was poised in scripted form in the dialect known as classical Chinese dialect.

Zhou dynasty arose after the demise of Shang Dynasty and before the advent of Qin Dynasty and is also known to survive for the longest span of time than any other Kingdom. The empire is known for its great work in philosophy and religion with some prominent philosophical and religious schools like Taoism and Confucian literature that arose during the era.
