The volleyball player was prescribed a 10-day course of methicillin to treat her infection. By day 7, her wound appeared to have

healed and was no longer inflamed and warm to the touch, so she stopped taking the methicillin thinking that the infection had been eradicated.
While most of the bacteria had been killed, there were some still lingering in the wound site. Once she stopped taking the antibiotic, they started multiplying and within two weeks, the wound was once again inflamed, warm to the touch, and very painful.

The population had once again reached 1,000 individuals, with 350 of them the SS type and 650 of them the FT type. There were no bacteria left that were fully susceptible to methicillin. Now what is the percentage of each bacterial type?

Answer:

SS Type = 35%.

FT Type = 65%.

Explanation:

This is important to complete the drug course prescribed by the doctors because this kill the whole population of the bacteria.

The percentage of the bacterial type can be calculated by the given formula:

No. of bacteria of the particular strain/ total number of bacteria × 100.

For the SS type strain = 35/ 1000 × 100

SS type bacteria strain percentage = 35%.

For the FT type bacteria = 650 / 1000 × 100

FT type bacteria strain = 65%.

Thus, the answer is SS Type = 35%.

FT Type = 65%.
