Although Synthetic Division is a simplified or shorthand method of dividing polynomials, not only coefficients are attached; typically, what is attached or used are linear expressions that have leading coefficients, where the leading coefficient must be 1. In case the leading coefficient is not 1, the linear expression has to be divided in order to convert the leading coefficient to 1. For example, 9y + 1 would be used as y + 1/9.
