He didn't have direct male successors, so Edward III of England saw an opportunity because he was related to him by his mother. But the Frenchs didn't want a Foreigner ruler, a lot less an English one. So, Philip VI of France looked out for the French crown and kingdom. England won many battles at the beginning and they seized territories, but after years of war, the Frenchs stood up and regained their lands and their rights. It was devastating and many alliances took place in the war, connecting the countries with others. But in the end, France got his territory back and the Englishmen went back to their Island.
