In the play "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde, Jack Worthing is the guardian of a young ward, Cecily Cardew. In Act I, Algernon, Jack's best friend, finds out about the young woman, and is interested in meeting her. However, Jack does not want Algernon to do so out of a sense of protectiveness towards her.
