According to Thomas Nast, lack of political focus on the effort failed to solve the sectional wounds, and the elimination of the freed slaves' .

In the year 1863 on the day of 1st January President Abraham Lincoln pronounced the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation confirmed that all Afro Americans held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and after this shall be free and they can lead their life on their own. This order was pronounced on the end third year of civil war.

According to Thomas Nast, the American Civil War sealed the Union and freed the slaves. During Reconstruction, on the other hand, an absence of political focus on the exertion neglected to illuminate the sectional injuries, and the freed slaves' elimination, newly increased civil liberties neglected to realize long-term racial integration.
